Susan, My First Summer Coding Camp

I am Susanna, I am 14 years old, I live and school at Ijebu Imusin. Websites, applications and coding as a whole as always seem like magic to me because my Aunty is into it, but not until I signed up for this camp that I understood what they are, this has totally changed my perspective.

The coding camp is an experience that I will never forget, at first when I was informed about it, I became glad and curious that I would finally get a chance to interact more with computers. I have never attended any summer camp, before so I was nervous about the summer camp. On the d-day, some teenagers came in as boarders for the summer camp.

On Thursday the first class started and all my anxiety went away and I felt free as I met many new faces at about my age, I felt so cool since it was teenagers only. Within this period I learnt so many things, some are how computer works, the types of computers we have, how to create an email, what emails are used for, how to access and make very good use of the internet, an also learnt how to stay safe on the internet.

Learning python has been a wow for me and I am so glad I learnt, even my teachers at school did not teach me this in Computer Science classes, maybe there can be an adult camping too where they can also learn. It was so interesting when mathematics was included to this coding camp while I was learning python.

I say a very big thank you to the host for making this coding camp a dream come true for me, the tutors were very generous and kind, I made new friends. Every part about this coding camp is marvellous and great, we ate good food, had fun, went to the farm, played games and also learnt how to communicate with one another.

Hi, Susanna! My name is Caspar, I’m a friend of your auntie, and I enjoyed reading your report about the summer camp.

I’m particularly glad that you say you learnt to make good use of the internet, because it’s very, very important for everybody’s future that young people from all countries, cultures, and languages learn what the internet is and how to make proper use of it so that it remains a free and open resource for all.

After reading yours and everybody else’s essays, I’m hoping that I will be able to make it to the next coding summer camp, because I’d like to learn Python like you. I only know HTML, CSS, PHP, a bit of JavaScript, and some WordPress so far. Python sounds interesting!

I may be too old to attend, but if I’m able to make it to Nigeria from Europe, perhaps your auntie will let me sneak in. 😊

Thank you again for your report, and best of luck for the future!

Thank you, sir
I hope you would be able to make it to next year summer camp,it nice meeting you.

Hi Susan, it’s good to hear you had fun coding.
It is fun, although can be hard to understand some times, don’t give up. Keep learning and building, I hope to hear about your expertise in the nearest future.

I look at your work and the journey you have started. I wish I had the same opportunity as you have . Let nothing in this world stop you now. You have no idea how proud I am of your passion

Thank you Susan for writing about your experience.

I hope to be able to contribute better next year

Hi Susan,
I’m glad you were able to be part of this camp. I can see from your essay that you enjoyed every bit of it. Technology and the internet will definitely open up your world to greater things and bigger dreams.
Yes, your Auntie has set the bar high for all the Job women – I dare you to go higher dear, and please remember to give back when you can, too.
All the best!

From one Susan to another: well done! Python is such a fun language to work in. I’m glad you learned a lot, and I hope you’ll have many more opportunities to explore all the things you can do with technology. Good luck with all your future studies!

P.S. Aunties are the best.

Hello Susan, it is so inspiring to read your story and everything you learned. I wish there were such opportunities when I was young. I have worked with python before and loved it. Keep going and all the best!

Alice, Kenya.

Susannah, I am happy and glad, u are in the coding camp. I will surely live up to my expectation as par our deal. A deal is a deal. Once i am around, i will surely make it up.

Thank you for sharing your story, Susanna. My first experience with computers was at the age of 12, and now (many, many years later), I still feel like they’re magic. 🙂

You’ve already begun to experience how these tools can help connect us with other people, even around the world. I hope you’ll continue to study and practice what you’ve learned, so you can inspire others to do the same. Never stop learning!
